We’ve all seen the ads on TV. “Be all that you can be.” “The few, the proud.” “A global force for good.” America’s armed forces rely on smart, catchy, empowering recruitment campaigns to attract volunteers. But inspiring young civilians to serve is only half the battle. Once they’ve joined the service, the next mission is to keep them engaged and energized.
The key to retention is understanding the experience from those who know it best. We conducted honest conversations with service members – enlisted and officers alike. The soldiers provided valuable insights into what it means to serve, how their enlistment changed their lives, and why they continue to serve.
